What’s the best way to start painting as a total beginner?

Posted

I’ve never painted anything before but I want to start exploring it as a hobby. Should I begin with acrylic, watercolor, or something else? What basic supplies should I get and are there any beginner-friendly exercises or resources I should follow?

Acrylic – forgiving, quick-drying, easy to layer.
(Alternative: Watercolor for a softer, looser style, but it's trickier to control.)

Basic Supplies:

  • Acrylic paints (primary colors + black/white)

  • 2–3 brushes (flat & round, medium size)

  • Canvas panels or acrylic paper

  • Palette (plastic or paper)

  • Water cup + rag/paper towel

Beginner Exercises:

  • Color mixing (make your own color wheel)

  • Simple shapes & gradients

  • Paint objects from life (cup, fruit, plants)

  • Try Bob Ross or The Art Sherpa (YouTube) for guided painting
