Effective Ways to Introduce New Players to Complex RPG Systems (e.g., Pathfinder 2e, Shadowrun)?

Posted

I'm an experienced GM who often brings new players into our group, and sometimes they're intimidated by the rules complexity of games like Pathfinder 2e, Shadowrun, or even certain editions of D&D. What are the most effective strategies for introducing complete beginners to these more intricate RPG systems without overwhelming them? I'm looking for practical advice on how to handle character creation (pre-gens vs. guided creation), rules explanations (when and how much to explain), running introductory one-shots, and managing the learning curve during the first few sessions. Are there specific scenarios, teaching aids, or in-game techniques that you've found particularly successful in getting new players comfortable and engaged quickly, even with a high rule barrier?

Start with pre-generated characters and a simple one-shot focused on story over mechanics. Introduce rules gradually as they come up in play, not all at once. Use visual aids, cheat sheets, and plenty of in-character moments to keep things fun. Focus on roleplay first—mechanics can follow.
